Dear EMS Members:

We had a wonderful talk with Dr. Gerald Gleich, June 24, 2001.

For one hour, Dr. Gleich discussed the latest results of his EMS and Toxic Oil Syndrome research (which is currently being funded by the World Health Organization) and answered questions from the NEMSN board members.


In the near future we will be adding a transcript of the discussion to the website and hope to be able to provide a webstream option for those of you who would like to listen to it on your computer.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Gerald J. Gleich, M.D.  is the George M. Eisenberg Professor of Medicine and Immunology at Mayo Clinic and Foundation, Rochester, Minnesota. 

Dr. Gleich is the recipient of several grants from the National Institutes

of Health which focus primarily on the functions of eosinophils. The
primary focus the past three years has been studies on the Toxic Oil
Syndrome which occurred in Spain.
 
He has authored over 150 papers in professional journals and coauthored over 300 scientific papers. He serves as contributing editor for the "Journal of Clinical Immunology," the "New England and Regional Allergy Proceedings," and on the advisory board of  "Clinical Immunology and Immunopathology." He is known as one of the world's foremost experts on eosinophils.
 
Dr. Gleich has received numerous awards. He was recognized as a "Fellow, American Association for the Advancement of Science" for studies of the" structure, the biological properties and the role in pathogenesis of disease of basic proteins present in the cytoplasmic granules of eosinophilic leukocytes."
 
Dr. Gleich appeared on the Dateline NBC segments on 5-htp aired April 6,
1999.
